Daredevils wanted

St John Ambulance Surrey is on the lookout for local daredevils to take part in their 2010 sponsored abseil on 25 September.

Those with a strong head for heights will take the plunge from the top of Guildford Cathedral. The event has been organised to raise vital funds for the charity’s community first responders group that operates across Surrey.

Zoe Figueiredo, County Fundraiser for St John Ambulance Surrey, said the event is a great way for people to fulfil an ambition whilst raising money for a good cause.

'The view from the top of the cathedral will be amazing as I’m sure will be the adrenaline rush from abseiling down the side so if you’re an adrenaline junkie who fancies a challenge then we want to hear from you!'

What first responders do

Responders are advanced first aid trained volunteers equipped with defibrillators, who are on call within their local area to provide immediate support to heart attack victims and those with a medical problem.

St John Ambulance operates the scheme in a partnership with South East Coast Ambulance Service who alerts the volunteers to an emergency in their local patch at the same time as dispatching an ambulance. The responder can be on the spot in the first crucial minutes, dispensing life saving first aid and CPR while the ambulance is still on its way.

Surrey's community first responders have answered over 2000 calls since the scheme started in 2006.

'The work they do literally can be the difference between lives being lost and saved,' said Figueiredo.

'It’s unfortunate that hearts attacks are so common but they really can happen to anyone so everyone should consider supporting our volunteers as you never know if you or a loved one may one day need their help.'

Limited places

There are only 60 places available for the abseil so please book early to claim a place. Entrants must be over 16 years of age and will be required to pay a £25 deposit and raise a minimum of £150 sponsorship. There will be prizes for the highest sponsorship.
