First aiders on hand to keep the party going at Notting
Hill

St John Ambulance will be on hand
throughout the celebrations of Notting
Hill Carnival on 26 and 27 August and have some simple
tips to help ensure you make the most of the carnival
atmosphere.
Volunteers from the UK's leading first aid charity expect to
treat around 500 casualties over the two days for minor injuries
caused by the sheer volume of people, ranging from blisters to
sprains, as well as more serious conditions.
Seamus Kelly OBE, Commissioner of St John Ambulance in London,
says: 'We'll be at Notting Hill to ensure that carnival goers are
well looked after and have a good time but people can help
themselves by being prepared.

'If the weather is hot, follow our Strawberries and sun cream advice to avoid
problems like sun burn and heat exhaustion. Don't go
strawberry-red, apply sun cream regularly; also protect yourself
with a hat and loose clothing during the hottest part of the day
and drink water frequently.
'If the weather is cold or wet, take extra layers and waterproof
clothing or an umbrella.
'It can sometimes be difficult to reach cafes and restaurants
due to the volume of people so we advise that visitors take water
and food with them, to avoid dehydration and hunger. Also,
with all the standing and walking around comfortable shoes are a
must to minimise blisters, strains and sprains.

'Last year we treated over 500 people during the carnival.
We hope this year the public will listen to our advice and come
well prepared. Of course, there will still be St John
Ambulance volunteers stationed around Notting Hill to provide help
to those who need it,' says Mr Kelly.
St John Ambulance volunteers will be operating 15 ambulances and
11 treatment centres each day over the weekend and over 150
volunteers will be on hand each day along the carnival route. The
volunteers, who provide first aid, medical and ambulance support,
include doctors, nurses, paramedics, ambulance crews and first
aiders. They will be working with staff from the London
Ambulance Service. St John Ambulance receives no financial support
for this event.
